The Met Gala season is quickly approaching! Many fans of the event have been anxiously waiting for an update on this year’s Met Gala theme and on February 15th, Vogue finally released the details for the upcoming 2024 Met Gala, including the four people who will serve as co-chairs for the event. And of course, this raises many questions. What celebrities will be attending the gala? What designers will be worn on the red carpet? Why this theme? Keep reading to find out!

What is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit is an annual fundraising gala held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume in New York City. The Gala is held annually on the first Monday of May and is an event joined by many professional spheres, including fashion, film, television, music, theater, business, sports, social media, and politics. Attendees are expected to curate their fashion around the theme, and some pull it off better than others. Costumes are bankrolled by fashion houses to advertise their latest collections, using celebrities as models. Companies like Instagram will buy seats for the event which will be then filled with their celebrity invitees. There are only two real ways to attend the gala: Getting invited or having tons of money. On average, a Met Gala ticket can cost upwards of $50,000, which is why you mostly see influential people such as the Kardashians, Billie Elish, Blake Lively, and the infamous Anna Wintour who co-chaired the Met Gala since 1995.

Met Gala 2024 Theme

So, what’s this year’s theme? According to Vogue, “The 2024 Met Gala will celebrate the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and the official dress code is ‘The Garden of Time.'” The exhibit will feature around 250 rare wardrobe items from the institute’s permanent collection that span over 400 years. The theme is curated by Costume Institute’s chief curator, Andrew Bolton and is supposed to reimagine historical garnments  from the collection that might not be worn due to the garnments fragile conditions. The dress code is “The Garden of Time” which draws information from the exhibits fashion history and the nature of the garnments themselves. This leaves plenty of room for interpretation, but many expect to see florals as the main pattern of the evening. Some notable designers that are expected to run the red carpet are Schiparelli, Givenchy, Saint Laurent, and Dior, all historical design houses.
