San Bernardino County, California — What was supposed to be a joyful family trip to celebrate a college graduation turned into an unimaginable tragedy when 4-year-old twin sisters Nyah and Naomi Leon were killed in a horrific crash while traveling with their family.
The heartbreaking accident occurred on the morning of May 22 along eastbound State Route 62 near Freda, leaving relatives devastated and searching for answers.
Family Never Arrived at Graduation Celebration
According to authorities, the family was traveling to Arizona to attend a college graduation ceremony when the fatal collision occurred.
Inside the vehicle were Sergio Leon, Antonio Leon, Antonio’s wife Hermina Hernandez, and the couple’s twin daughters, Nyah and Naomi.
As family members gathered for the celebration, relatives became increasingly worried when the group failed to arrive.
“We had family members starting to arrive. As they were arriving, that family — Sergio, Antonio, Naya, Naomi, and Mini never showed up,” family cousin Itzia Zamarripa told.
What initially seemed like an unexpected delay soon turned into a nightmare.
Crash Claims Lives of Twin Sisters
The California Highway Patrol responded to the two-vehicle collision shortly after 8 a.m. Authorities later confirmed that the twin girls were pronounced dead at the scene.
As relatives tried to determine why the family never arrived, Zamarripa said she eventually received a phone call suggesting the missing family members may have been involved in a serious accident.
The devastating confirmation would soon follow.
Relative Describes Horrific Collision
According to Zamarripa, investigators indicated another vehicle entered the roadway and collided with her relatives’ vehicle, leaving little opportunity for anyone to avoid the crash.
“This car so happened to go into, hit the back of the truck as they entered into the lane, and ended up perpendicular to my cousin,” Zamarripa said. “So my cousins had no time to react at all.”
She then described the terrifying impact that followed.
“They t-boned that car and immediately burst it into flames,” she added.
The violent collision left the family and community struggling to comprehend the magnitude of the loss.
Family Left Devastated by Loss
Zamarripa said authorities were able to identify several of the victims and confirmed that the vehicle involved belonged to her relatives. The emotional toll on the family has been overwhelming as loved ones attempt to process the tragedy.
“We’re numb. We’re just, it’s been devastating,” Zamarripa said.
Family members say the pain has been especially difficult because the twins were known for bringing joy to everyone around them.

Preschool Graduation Was Just Days Away
The tragedy became even more heartbreaking after relatives revealed that Nyah and Naomi were scheduled to graduate from preschool on June 3, just days after the fatal crash.
Instead of preparing for a celebration of the girls’ accomplishments, family members are now mourning the loss of two young lives taken far too soon.
Despite the grief, Zamarripa said the family has received tremendous support from friends, neighbors and members of the community.
“The outpour of support from everybody has been great,” she said. “So many people have been affected by their, by this loss.”
Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
