Placentia, California — A California woman is facing a murder charge after investigators concluded that her 2-year-old son’s death was not an accidental drowning as initially reported, but instead a homicide allegedly carried out by the child’s mother.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Placentia Police Department, 41-year-old Melissa Beisel has been charged with murdering her toddler son, Aidan, and then attempting to make the tragedy appear as a bath-time accident.
The case, which was first investigated as a drowning, took a dramatic turn after authorities conducted additional forensic and investigative work that ultimately ruled out drowning as the child’s cause of death.
Child’s Death Initially Reported as Accidental Drowning
Authorities were first called to the family’s home after reports that a young child had drowned while taking a bath.
According to police, Beisel told investigators that she had been bathing Aidan inside a plastic storage bin placed within a walk-in shower. She claimed she briefly left the bathroom to retrieve soap and returned about two minutes later to find the child face down and unresponsive in the container.
Police said Beisel reported attempting CPR to revive her son.
The original account led investigators to treat the case as a possible accidental drowning.
Investigators Say Evidence Told a Different Story
As detectives continued examining the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death, questions began to emerge about what actually happened inside the home.
According to prosecutors, the subsequent investigation determined that drowning was not responsible for the death of the otherwise healthy 2-year-old child.
Instead, investigators concluded that the manner of death was homicide.
Authorities have not publicly detailed exactly how the child was killed, but they allege that Beisel intentionally staged the scene to support the drowning narrative.
Police also said Beisel injured herself with a sharp object after unsuccessfully attempting CPR. Investigators believe those actions were part of an effort to portray the incident as a tragic accident and demonstrate emotional distress.
Father Discovered Mother and Child Hours Later
According to investigators, Beisel remained in the bathroom with her son for approximately six hours before the child’s father discovered them.
Police said the father found Beisel in the shower alongside the boy’s body and immediately called 911.
The disturbing circumstances prompted a lengthy investigation involving law enforcement and forensic experts.
Initially, Beisel was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse causing great bodily injury after being released from a hospital.
However, the case was later upgraded following additional findings by investigators.
District Attorney Condemns Alleged Actions
On June 4, authorities formally charged Beisel with murder.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer issued a strongly worded statement following the filing of charges.
“A mother is a child’s first protector,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “For a mother to use the very arms that are meant to shield her child from harm to instead physically extinguish the life of a child she created is a depravity which we will never be able to fully comprehend.”
Prosecutors say the case represents a heartbreaking betrayal of a child who depended on his mother for care and protection.
What Happens Next?
Beisel is currently being held without bail in Madera County while the criminal case moves forward.
Court records indicate she is scheduled to be arraigned on June 30 in Fullerton, where she will formally respond to the murder charge.
As the case proceeds through the legal system, prosecutors will seek to prove that the toddler’s death was intentionally caused and later disguised as an accident.
