Cobb County, Georgia — A Georgia mother is facing criminal charges after authorities say she allowed her 13-year-old daughter to operate an SUV during a school drop-off, leading to a serious accident that left the woman hospitalized with significant injuries.
According to the Cobb County Police Department, the incident occurred on the morning of April 22 outside Brumby Elementary School. Investigators say the mother, identified as 35-year-old Shumeka Johnson, was struck and seriously injured when the vehicle driven by her teenage daughter suddenly accelerated.
The case has since resulted in a reckless conduct charge against Johnson, with authorities alleging that her decision to allow the underage teen to drive created a dangerous situation for everyone involved.
Teen Driver Allegedly Lost Control During School Drop-Off
Police said Johnson’s 13-year-old daughter was behind the wheel of a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica that was stopped in a school drop-off lane.
Investigators reported that a 4-year-old boy and a 6-month-old girl were also inside the vehicle when the incident occurred.
According to authorities, the SUV unexpectedly accelerated forward while Johnson was standing in front of it. The vehicle struck her and continued moving until it came to rest on top of her.
Police said the teenager then shifted the vehicle into reverse, causing it to back into an unoccupied parked car nearby.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Johnson to a local hospital for treatment.
Police Say Mother Endangered Child by Allowing Her to Drive
Court documents obtained by local media indicate that investigators believe Johnson knowingly allowed her daughter to operate the vehicle despite her age.
An arrest affidavit states that Johnson allegedly endangered the safety of the child driver because the vehicle was being operated without an adult inside.
Authorities further argued that her actions demonstrated a conscious disregard for the risks associated with allowing an underage child to control a motor vehicle.
According to the affidavit, investigators concluded that Johnson’s actions represented a significant departure from what a reasonable person would do under similar circumstances.
As a result, police sought criminal charges related to reckless conduct.
Arrest Warrant Issued Weeks After Crash
A criminal warrant for Johnson’s arrest was issued on June 3.
Reports indicate that Cobb County Magistrate Court Judge Charles Chesbro reviewed the evidence and found probable cause to support the charge before signing the warrant.
Johnson’s bond was later set at $300, according to local reports.
The case has drawn attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the crash and the fact that multiple children were present inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.

A GoFundMe campaign reportedly created by a family friend describes Johnson as a devoted wife, mother of five, and self-employed hairstylist whose injuries have dramatically affected her daily life.
According to the fundraiser, the crash resulted in severe injuries that have required multiple surgeries. The campaign also states that Johnson is now facing the difficult process of learning to walk again.
The fundraiser notes that caring for her six-month-old daughter while recovering from extensive injuries has added additional challenges for the family.
As of Thursday morning, the campaign had raised approximately $1,800 toward its $5,000 goal to help cover medical expenses and childcare costs.
The investigation remains one of the more unusual traffic-related cases in Cobb County this year, highlighting the serious legal and safety consequences that can arise when unlicensed minors are allowed to operate vehicles.
