Cocke County, Tennessee — A tragic flooding incident in East Tennessee has claimed the life of a woman after powerful floodwaters swept her away near her home as severe weather continued to impact the region.
Authorities say the deadly incident occurred Thursday as heavy rainfall triggered dangerous flooding conditions across multiple counties.
Woman Swept Away by Swift Floodwaters
According to officials, the victim was a 64-year-old woman who was outside her residence when rapidly rising floodwaters became overwhelming.
Members of the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was near a vehicle outside her home when the strong current suddenly swept her downstream.
The incident unfolded amid ongoing heavy rain and flash flooding that created hazardous conditions across parts of East Tennessee.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the area in an effort to locate and rescue the woman.
Rescue Teams Launch Search Effort
Swift water rescue teams and first responders worked to recover the victim after she was carried away by the powerful flow of water.
Despite their efforts, the woman could not be saved.
“Swift water teams and other first responders were able to recover the victim from the water and was pronounced deceased,” a statement from Sheriff C.J. Ball of the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office reads.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Flash Flood Warnings Issued Across East Tennessee
The tragedy occurred as weather officials warned residents about rapidly developing flash flood conditions throughout the region.

Roads Impacted by Flooding
The severe weather also caused transportation disruptions across the area.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced the closure of part of State Route 160 after floodwaters spilled across the roadway.
Images released by transportation officials showed powerful water rushing over sections of the road, highlighting the dangerous conditions faced by motorists.
