Laguna Beach, California — A frantic search continued Wednesday after an adolescent girl disappeared in the ocean when she, her mother, and a sibling were swept into dangerous waters near a Southern California beach.
Emergency crews were called to Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach on Tuesday evening after reports of multiple swimmers in distress. What began as a family outing quickly turned into a large-scale rescue operation as powerful ocean conditions overwhelmed the family near the shoreline.
Authorities say the mother and her two children were caught by strong surf and pulled into the water, prompting nearby witnesses to take immediate action.
Bystanders Rushed Into the Water to Help
According to Laguna Beach Marine Safety officials, witnesses called 911 around 7:30 p.m. after spotting several people struggling in the ocean.
Before emergency responders arrived, bystanders entered the water and successfully rescued the mother and one of the children from the rough conditions.
Officials praised the quick actions of those who stepped in to help during the emergency.
However, despite the successful rescue of two family members, another child was unable to be located.
“The mother and her two children were swept into the ocean by powerful water conditions while near the shoreline,” officials said.
Two civilians who assisted in the rescue effort were later evaluated at the scene and transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Search Continues for Missing Girl
As of Wednesday afternoon, the adolescent girl remained missing.
Authorities described the ongoing operation as an active search effort involving multiple agencies and resources. Rescue teams have continued combing waters and surrounding coastal areas in hopes of locating the missing swimmer.
Officials emphasized that changes in the visible presence of rescue personnel near the beach should not be interpreted as a reduction in efforts.
Instead, search crews are expanding their coverage area based on ocean conditions and scientific modeling.
“Marine Safety is expanding the search area beyond the victim’s last known location,” officials said.
The search strategy takes into account water currents, wave activity, drift patterns, and other environmental factors that may influence where a missing swimmer could be carried.
Multiple Agencies Join Search Operation
The search effort includes personnel from Laguna Beach Marine Safety, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol, and the United States Coast Guard.
Rescuers have been working throughout the day to cover a wider stretch of coastline and offshore waters.
Officials noted that search patterns often evolve over time, particularly when dealing with changing ocean conditions and extended search periods.
As the operation continues, authorities are urging the public to avoid interfering with rescue activities and to remain alert to safety warnings along local beaches.

Dangerous Surf Conditions Persist Along Coast
The incident comes as Southern California beaches experience elevated surf and strong swells. Forecasters reported waves reaching as high as 9 feet at south-facing beaches, including areas around Laguna Beach.
The National Weather Service warned that hazardous ocean conditions would continue through Wednesday before gradually improving later in the week.
Even experienced swimmers can face significant risks when strong currents, large breaking waves, and unexpected surges combine near shorelines.
Officials continue to encourage beachgoers to pay close attention to posted warnings and avoid entering the water during dangerous surf events.
For the family involved, the focus remains on the ongoing search and hopes for answers as crews continue their efforts off the Laguna Beach coastline.
