Zionsville, Indiana — Most children dream of birthday parties inspired by princesses, superheroes or their favorite cartoons. But for one Indiana toddler, there was only one theme worthy of her special day: butter.
What began as a simple conversation about birthday plans quickly turned into a viral family celebration that has delighted thousands online.
Toddler’s Love of Butter Inspires Unique Birthday Theme
When Jalyn Miranda, a 24-year-old NICU nurse from Zionsville, began asking her daughter Milena about her favorite things before her third birthday, she expected answers similar to those of most toddlers.
Instead, she received a response she never saw coming.
“A few months before Milena’s birthday, we were talking about what to do to celebrate, and I was asking her questions about her favorite things to spark ideas,” Miranda said. “When I asked her what she likes, the first thing she said was, ‘I love butter,’ in her cute little toddler voice.”
The answer immediately made the family laugh, but the more they thought about it, the more it made sense.
Butter Obsession Had Become Family Legend
According to Miranda, Milena’s love for butter wasn’t a new development.
For more than a year, the family had repeatedly caught the toddler sneaking sticks of butter from the refrigerator or helping herself to butter left on the kitchen counter.
“A butter theme was totally on-brand for her, and I loved that it was unique and not overdone like many kids’ birthday themes typically are,” Miranda explained.
To celebrate the running family joke, framed photos showing Milena caught eating butter became part of the party decorations.
As the big day approached, the toddler’s excitement only grew stronger.
“For about two months leading up to her party, she would ask us, ‘Is today my butter birthday?’ when she woke up because she was so excited,” Miranda said.
Giant Butter Stick Becomes Party Centerpiece
When the party finally arrived, nearly every detail reflected Milena’s favorite food.
Miranda personally designed and created most of the decorations herself, spending weeks working on them with her husband after their children went to bed each night.
One decoration quickly became the centerpiece of the celebration.
“My favorite thing to prep was the giant butter stick,” she said. “It was definitely a focal point of the party and easy to make.”
Using foam board materials, Miranda created an oversized butter stick that became one of the event’s most photographed attractions.
Family Comes Together for Memorable Celebration
The preparation was particularly impressive because Miranda was only three weeks postpartum at the time, caring for a newborn alongside three older children.
Family members stepped in to help make the celebration possible.
Miranda’s mother, grandmother and mother-in-law prepared food for guests, while her mother-in-law created butter-themed playdough kits as party favors.
Approximately 30 guests attended the gathering, many already familiar with Milena’s unusual love of butter.
One of the most memorable activities involved children learning how to churn their own butter while Miranda’s husband entertained guests dressed in an inflatable cow costume.
Party Goes Viral and Attracts Surprise Attention
After the celebration, videos from the event spread rapidly across TikTok, drawing attention from viewers who loved the family’s creativity and sense of humor.
The viral success even caught the attention of Land O’ Lakes, which sent the birthday girl a surprise package.
“It was so sweet of them to notice her,” Miranda said.
Along with branded gifts and coupons, Milena was allowed to choose her favorite butter product from the store, eventually selecting butter balls that quickly became one of her favorite snacks.
For Miranda, the experience reinforced an important parenting lesson.
“I hope overall that this encourages other parents to lean into their kids’ interests and watch how it helps them flourish,” she said. “Our daughter was filled with joy and loved seeing everyone celebrating the way she wanted for her birthday.”
