SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kansas — A routine geology field trip turned into a once-in-a-lifetime discovery for a young Kansas student after he uncovered the fossilized remains of a massive prehistoric marine predator that lived millions of years ago.
Twelve-year-old Corbin Bullard, a member of a local 4-H geology club in Sedgwick County, made the remarkable find while exploring a site in Jewell County. The discovery has generated excitement among fossil enthusiasts and has further fueled the young student’s dream of becoming a paleontologist.
Field Trip Leads to Unexpected Discovery
Corbin has long been fascinated by rocks, fossils, and Earth’s ancient history. His passion led him to join the local 4-H geology club, which regularly organizes educational field trips where students learn how to identify and collect geological specimens.
During one of those outings, Corbin noticed something unusual protruding from the ground.
“I wandered off, and I saw the vertebra sticking out of the ground,” Corbin said.
What initially appeared to be a single fossilized bone quickly turned into something much bigger. According to his mother, Wendy Bullard, the family immediately realized they had found something extraordinary.
“He just looked down, and he said, ‘Whoa,'” Wendy said. “So we walked over and, sure enough, it was seven or eight large vertebrae. We didn’t know what it belonged to, but we knew it wasn’t modern.”
Excavation Reveals Massive Ancient Predator
As the excavation continued, the team uncovered additional vertebrae and realized the fossil was part of a much larger skeleton. The exposed section alone was nearly as large as Corbin himself.
Determined to learn more, Corbin and his mother returned to the site multiple times. Each visit required a six-hour round-trip drive, but the effort proved worthwhile.
The pair made three additional excavation trips, carefully uncovering more of the fossilized remains with each visit.
“Luckily, the rest of it was there,” Wendy said. “We didn’t get the whole thing. Some of the tail was already gone. But we started at the tail, and by the third trip, we found the skull.”
Their persistence paid off as they eventually uncovered a fossil measuring more than 15 feet in length.
What Is a Tylosaurus?
Experts identified the fossil as belonging to a Tylosaurus, one of the most feared marine predators of the Late Cretaceous period.
Tylosaurus lived approximately 85 million years ago and dominated the ancient seas that once covered much of what is now the central United States. These giant reptiles could grow to impressive sizes and sat at the top of the marine food chain.
Although often mistaken for dinosaurs, Tylosaurus was actually a marine reptile that spent its life in the ocean hunting fish, sharks, and other sea creatures.
The discovery provides a fascinating glimpse into a time when Kansas was covered by a vast inland sea filled with prehistoric life.
Young Fossil Hunter Shares His Discovery
Since uncovering the fossil, Corbin has become something of a local celebrity among geology enthusiasts. He has been presenting his findings at community events and educational gatherings, helping others learn about the ancient creature he discovered.

The young fossil hunter is also showcasing his work at the county fair, where visitors can learn more about the excavation process and the significance of the find.
For Corbin, the discovery has only strengthened his interest in paleontology and scientific exploration.
4-H Club Credited for the Opportunity
Wendy says none of the discovery would have been possible without the support and guidance provided by the local 4-H geology club.
The organization helped members access fossil-rich sites, obtain necessary permissions, and learn proper excavation techniques.
“The whole reason any of this is possible is because of the 4-H club,” Wendy said. “Corbin and I can’t just go out on our own, know where to look and have permission to dig. It takes the club and its leaders to provide those opportunities.”
The remarkable find serves as a reminder that curiosity, education, and hands-on learning can sometimes lead to extraordinary discoveries hidden beneath our feet.
