Tarzana, California — A Los Angeles-area man is accused of fatally stabbing his mother’s elderly boyfriend before allegedly calling 911 and making a disturbing statement that immediately triggered a homicide investigation.
Authorities say the suspect later approached responding officers and identified himself as the person they were searching for.
Disturbing 911 Call Sparks Emergency Response
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a residence in the 19200 block of Erwin Street in Tarzana at approximately 9:30 a.m. on June 3 after receiving a radio call regarding a violent incident.
Investigators say the caller made a shocking statement during the emergency call.
“I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” the caller allegedly told dispatchers, according to police.
The statement immediately raised concerns and prompted officers to rush to the scene.
Victim Found With Fatal Stab Wound
When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered 81-year-old James Handy lying in the front yard. According to police, Handy was “unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest.”
Emergency responders attempted to provide aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, Handy was later pronounced dead.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the fatal confrontation.
Suspect Allegedly Approached Officers
Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill. According to investigators, Gledhill remained at the scene and approached officers shortly after they arrived.
Authorities allege he flagged down responding officers and admitted his involvement in the incident. Police said Gledhill was allegedly “telling them he was the one they were looking for.”
He was immediately taken into custody without further incident.
Family Connection Revealed During Investigation
Investigators later learned that Gledhill lived at the residence with his mother. Police said the victim, James Handy, was the boyfriend of Gledhill’s mother and also lived at or frequently stayed at the home.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed what may have led to the deadly altercation or whether there had been previous disputes between the men.
Detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation.
Suspect Held on $2 Million Bond
Following his arrest, Gledhill was transported to Van Nuys Jail and booked on one count of murder. Authorities confirmed he is currently being held on a $2 million bond.
As of June 4, officials had not publicly confirmed whether formal charges had been filed beyond the initial arrest booking. The Los Angeles Police Department continues investigating the case and is asking anyone with information to contact homicide detectives.
The shocking case has drawn attention due to the suspect’s alleged statements before and after the killing, as investigators work to determine the events that led to the elderly man’s death.
