Ship Bottom, New Jersey — A tragic ocean rescue operation ended with the death of a 28-year-old New Jersey man after he was caught in a rip current along the coast of Long Beach Island, authorities said.
The incident unfolded Friday when emergency crews responded to reports of multiple people struggling in dangerous surf conditions.
Four People Caught in Dangerous Rip Current
According to the Ship Bottom Police Department, officers responded alongside fire and emergency medical personnel after receiving reports that four individuals had become trapped in a rip current.
Emergency responders from Surf City Fire, local EMS agencies and police rushed to the scene to assist. By the time first responders arrived, three of the individuals had successfully made it back to shore.
However, one man remained missing in the water, prompting an urgent search operation. Authorities quickly began combing the surf in hopes of locating him before it was too late.
Surfers Join Search Effort
As rescue crews searched the area, local surfers also entered the effort to help locate the missing swimmer.
According to police, local surfers and rescue personnel eventually found the man in the surf. Officials said he was discovered unconscious and not breathing.
Rescuers immediately began lifesaving measures at the scene while preparing him for emergency transport. The coordinated effort highlighted the critical role that both trained responders and local community members can play during water emergencies.
Victim Dies Despite Rescue Attempts
After being pulled from the water, the man was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts, authorities confirmed he later died.
Police identified the victim as David Maldonado-Ocelotl, 28, of Forked River, New Jersey. The tragic loss has left family members, friends and members of the local community mourning.

Following the incident, the Ship Bottom Police Department issued a statement expressing sympathy to the victim’s loved ones.
“The Ship Bottom Police Department extends its condolences to David’s family and loved ones,” the department said.
The death serves as another reminder of the dangers rip currents can pose, even to experienced swimmers and beachgoers.
