Tillamook County, Oregon — Federal authorities have charged an Oregon man with kidnapping and attempted abusive sexual contact after he allegedly abducted two women from a campsite along a public hiking trail during a terrifying overnight encounter.
Investigators say the suspect, who has a prior conviction for a violent sex offense, targeted the women while they were camping in a remote area during the summer of 2024.
Women Allegedly Taken From Tent During Overnight Attack
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon, the alleged incident occurred around midnight on July 4, 2024, on a public hiking trail in Tillamook County.
Authorities identified the suspect as Gene Arnold McLenithan, 58, who is accused of breaking into the tent where the two women were sleeping.
Investigators allege McLenithan forcibly removed the women from the campsite and carried out a series of threats while they were under his control.
The disturbing allegations have led to serious federal charges and renewed scrutiny of the suspect’s criminal history.
Prosecutors Detail Disturbing Allegations
According to investigators, McLenithan allegedly restrained the women and attempted to prevent them from seeing where they were being taken.
Authorities stated he “bound the victims [and] covered their eyes” before later informing them that he intended to sexually assault them.
Prosecutors further allege that the suspect possessed multiple weapons during the encounter.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Rochat said McLenithan allegedly carried a bag containing razor-sharp knives and used threats to intimidate the women.
According to court proceedings reported by The Oregonian, the suspect allegedly told the victims “it’s not worth” their lives while threatening sexual violence.
Officials have not publicly disclosed additional details regarding how the women ultimately escaped from the situation.
Suspect Has Prior Sex Crime Conviction

According to reports, he was convicted in 2000 for sodomy and burglary stemming from an attack that occurred in May 1999 in Otis, Oregon.
