San Francisco, California — A longtime surfer known throughout San Francisco’s surfing community has died after being rescued from the waters of Ocean Beach during unusually dangerous surf conditions that officials described as some of the roughest seen this season.
The victim, identified as 55-year-old Sandro Ricardo Britz, was an experienced surfer originally from Brazil who had spent years surfing the powerful waves along California’s coast.
Lifeguards Spot Distress Signal in Water
According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the incident unfolded during the early afternoon of May 28 at Ocean Beach, a location widely known for its strong currents, large waves and challenging surf conditions.
Officials said an off-duty lifeguard and three on-duty lifeguards noticed a surfer repeatedly raising his hands above his head, a recognized emergency distress signal.
Around the same time, emergency responders received reports of a surfer in trouble in the water.
Lifeguards immediately entered the surf and rushed toward the distressed individual.
“Upon reaching the distressed surfer, the lifeguards found an adult surfer who was face down, unconscious, and not breathing,” officials said.
Rescuers quickly brought the surfer back toward shore while initiating emergency medical care.
Emergency Crews Fight to Save Surfer
Once on land, firefighters and paramedics continued extensive lifesaving efforts.
“They initiated a rescue and began life-saving measures while bringing the victim back to the shoreline.”
The fire department later added:
“Paramedics from the San Francisco Fire Department arrived shortly afterward and continued with advanced life support care.”
Britz was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite efforts by emergency personnel, he later died. The official cause of death has not yet been released.
Ocean Conditions Were Especially Dangerous
The incident occurred during an unusual weather event that created exceptionally hazardous surf conditions along Northern California’s coastline. Reports indicated that a rare late-spring west swell generated waves more commonly seen during winter months.
The powerful ocean activity created dangerous double-overhead surf conditions, making navigation difficult even for experienced surfers.
Jonathan Baxter, spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, described the conditions in dramatic terms.
“Almost to the point where it looks like a washing machine cycle,” Baxter said, referring to the powerful and chaotic wave activity.
Officials noted that both the size and frequency of the waves were significantly greater than normal.
Surfing Community Mourns Loss
Friends and fellow surfers remembered Britz as someone who genuinely loved the ocean and spent much of his life in the water. B Sobral, who was surfing alongside Britz at the time of the incident, said he was a familiar face at Ocean Beach and respected throughout the local surfing community.
“If you walk here on the beach and talk to anyone, somebody knows him,” Sobral told KRON.

He added:
“He’s that kind of guy who loved to be here at Ocean Beach. We tried to live in the water as much as we could. Water was our place.”
The emotional tributes reflect the impact Britz had on those who shared his passion for surfing and the ocean.
Questions Remain About Cause of Death
While authorities have not yet released an official cause of death, Sobral said the family had been told something notable following medical examinations.
“His wife told me that they did not find water in his lungs,” Sobral said.
Officials have not publicly confirmed that information, and the investigation remains ongoing.
As the surfing community continues to mourn, the tragedy serves as a reminder that even highly experienced surfers can face serious risks when ocean conditions become extreme.
