Silver Spring, Maryland — Federal health officials have announced the recall of certain baby wipes sold at Target after testing identified bacteria that could potentially cause serious and life-threatening infections in some users.
The recall affects multiple varieties of Up & Up baby wipes, a popular Target store brand sold nationwide both in stores and online.
FDA Announces Recall After Customer Complaints
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall was initiated after consumers reported unusual discoloration in some baby wipe products.
The complaints prompted further testing and investigation into the affected wipes. Officials later confirmed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli bacteria in product samples.
The FDA warned that the contamination could present significant health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.
The products were sold at Target locations nationwide and through Target.com.
Bacteria May Cause Serious Infections
Health officials stated that exposure to the bacteria may lead to severe infections in certain individuals. According to the FDA, the contamination “may result in serious and life-threatening infections.”
Young children are considered particularly vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing. The agency also warned that people with weakened immune systems face an increased risk of complications.
For immunocompromised individuals, the infection is “more likely to spread into the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia,” the FDA stated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) additionally noted:
“B. cepacia germs can be resistant to antibiotics, making them difficult to treat.”

The recall includes specific batches of Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes.
Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes
- 20-count, 72-count and 100-count plastic pouches
- Expiration dates between May 10, 2028, and Nov. 5, 2028
- Manufactured between Nov. 7, 2025, and May 5, 2026
Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes
- 72-count and 100-count plastic pouches
- Expiration dates June 29, 2028, and June 30, 2028
- Manufactured between Dec. 29, 2025, and Dec. 30, 2025
Consumers are encouraged to carefully check product packaging and expiration dates to determine whether they own an affected package.

The FDA is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled wipes. Customers who purchased the affected products can return them to any Target location for a full refund.
Officials also recommend monitoring for signs of infection if the wipes have already been used, particularly among infants, young children and individuals with weakened immune systems.
