Mom Accused of Collecting Missing Daughter’s Food Stamps for 9 Years After She Vanished Without a Trace

Nashville, Tennessee — A Tennessee woman has been arrested after authorities accused her of collecting government food stamp benefits using the identity of her daughter, who has been missing for nearly a decade.

The arrest has renewed attention on the mysterious disappearance of Jodie “Brooke” Anderson, a Nashville teenager who vanished in 2018 and has never been found.

Mother Accused of Using Missing Daughter’s Identity

Authorities charged 51-year-old Shannon Anderson with felony food stamp fraud after investigators alleged she continued receiving benefits intended for her daughter long after Brooke disappeared.

According to reports, the alleged fraud continued for approximately nine years, despite Brooke no longer being present.

Family members expressed outrage over the allegations.

“Your baby’s missing and you’re capitalizing by going and drawing government benefits that our vets can’t even get,” Brooke’s aunt, De’Anna Anderson, said. “That’s unacceptable.”

Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges related to Brooke’s disappearance are being considered.

Teen Vanished After Visit to Restaurant

Brooke was reported missing in June 2018 after she and her mother reportedly visited a Jack in the Box restaurant in Nashville.

According to family members, both mother and daughter were homeless and struggling with drug addiction at the time. Investigators said Shannon Anderson was the last known person to see Brooke before she disappeared.

According to reports, Shannon told authorities she went to use the restroom and discovered Brooke was gone when she returned.

Despite the disappearance occurring in June, Brooke was not officially reported missing until August 2018, while her mother was incarcerated, according to family members.

Family Fears the Worst

Over the years, the case has grown cold, leaving relatives with few answers about what happened to Brooke. Now, family members hope the latest arrest will shine a spotlight on the unsolved disappearance.

“I was hoping for years we would find her, but everything points to murder,” De’Anna Anderson said.

The aunt explained that Brooke’s circumstances and lifestyle at the time of her disappearance have led her to fear that foul play was involved.

Despite the heartbreak, she continues to hope for answers.

“Finding her would take a huge load off of me and finding out what happened. Then I would want justice. If I said I didn’t, I’d be lying.”

Suspect Has Lengthy Criminal History

Court records show Shannon Anderson has a lengthy criminal record dating back more than a decade.

Before her struggles with drugs, she reportedly worked for the Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk’s Office and later as a school bus driver.

Authorities say her life changed dramatically over the years as legal troubles mounted.

According to records, she was convicted in connection with a 2017 promoting prostitution case, which resulted in her placement on the Tennessee sex offender registry.

She is currently listed as homeless.

Multiple Charges Keep Woman Behind Bars

In addition to the food stamp fraud allegations, authorities say Anderson is also facing charges related to violating sex offender registration requirements and failure to appear in court.

Officials confirmed she remains in custody on a $22,000 bond covering all seven charges currently filed against her.

Meanwhile, Brooke’s disappearance remains unsolved, and family members continue searching for answers about what happened to the teenager who vanished nearly a decade ago.

The latest arrest has once again brought public attention to a case that many fear has gone unresolved for far too long.
