Tallahassee, Florida — A promising young football player who had just celebrated his high school graduation and begun preparing for his college athletic career has died after being critically injured in a shooting at a Florida parking garage.
The victim, 18-year-old Gavin Yates-Lyons, was a freshman football player at Ball State University and had already begun attending classes after graduating from high school early.
Teen Athlete’s Future Cut Short by Violence
According to reports, Yates-Lyons returned home to Georgia to attend his graduation ceremony at Lowndes County High School before the tragic events unfolded.
The graduation ceremony reportedly took place the evening before he was shot.
Authorities say Yates-Lyons was among three people wounded in a shooting that occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on May 24 inside a parking garage at an apartment complex serving students near Florida State University.
Investigators believe the violence was connected to an off-campus gathering, though authorities have not publicly identified a suspect.
Reports indicate that the shooter — or shooters — remain at large as the investigation continues.

“Tragically, the morning after his graduation, Gavin was caught in the crossfire of a shooting and suffered critical injuries,” the fundraiser stated.
The message continued:
“Despite the efforts of medical professionals and the countless prayers offered on his behalf, Gavin unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.”
Family Shares Emotional Tribute
As family members continue mourning the sudden loss, they have shared messages honoring the young man’s life and faith. In a statement included on the fundraiser page, relatives expressed both grief and comfort during the difficult time.
“While our hearts are broken by this tremendous loss, we find comfort in knowing that Gavin is now resting with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven.”
