Bronx, New York — A routine bus ride turned deadly in the Bronx when a father of seven was fatally shot following an argument with another passenger, according to police and local reports.
Authorities identified the victim as Jonathan Pettigrew, 41, who was traveling on a BX36 bus near White Plains Road and East Tremont Avenue on June 8 when the confrontation unfolded.
Police allege the dispute began after Pettigrew confronted another rider who was speaking loudly on a cellphone. What started as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into violence, leaving a family mourning the loss of a father, brother, and loved one.
Argument on Bus Escalates Into Deadly Shooting
According to police, the confrontation occurred while the bus was traveling through the Bronx.
Investigators say Pettigrew objected to another passenger’s loud cellphone conversation, sparking an argument between the two men. During the dispute, the passenger allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Pettigrew in the abdomen before fleeing the scene.
The sudden gunfire sent passengers scrambling for safety.
Surveillance footage obtained by local news outlets reportedly showed riders rushing off the bus moments after the shooting occurred. Additional video showed Pettigrew exiting the bus before collapsing on a nearby sidewalk.
Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.
Victim Was Heading to Pick Up His Daughter
Police said Pettigrew was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The tragedy has been especially devastating for his family, who say he was simply trying to get through a normal day when his life was cut short.
According to reports, Pettigrew had just finished work and was on his way to pick up one of his daughters when the shooting occurred.
Family members described him as a devoted father who leaves behind seven children.
The loss has left relatives struggling to comprehend what happened.
Brother Remembers Jonathan as Funny and Caring
Jonathan’s brother, Avery Pettigrew, said he initially could not believe the devastating news.
“They told me my brother was deceased and I didn’t believe it,” Avery said.
Speaking about his brother, Avery described him as someone who enjoyed sports and had a positive personality.

“He’s a good kid. He’s not a street person. He’s very funny. He’s very into sports,” Avery said.
The family is now focused on seeking justice while coping with an unimaginable loss.
Investigation Remains Active
As detectives continue investigating the shooting, authorities have not announced any arrests.
Police are reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage, and are working to identify and locate the suspect who allegedly fled after the shooting.
The incident has renewed concerns about public safety on public transportation systems and the dangers of conflicts escalating into violence.
For Pettigrew’s loved ones, however, the focus remains on remembering a father whose life ended far too soon.
“I just want justice and hope he pays for what he’s done,” Avery told local media outlets.
With no suspect currently in custody, investigators are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the search continues.
