Yuba City, California — A young McDonald’s manager is facing a long and painful recovery after suffering severe burn injuries in what police describe as a shocking workplace attack involving scorching hot cooking oil.
Authorities say the incident left 20-year-old Jacob Smith hospitalized with life-altering injuries and requiring specialized treatment.
Manager Suffers Severe Burns in Alleged Attack
According to investigators, the incident occurred on May 30 at a McDonald’s restaurant in Yuba City.
Police allege that Smith’s co-worker, 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, attacked him following their work shift by throwing extremely hot oil onto him.
The assault reportedly caused devastating injuries to multiple areas of Smith’s body.
Medical officials said Smith suffered third-degree burns to his face, neck, hands and shoulders, injuries serious enough to require intensive care treatment.
Following the attack, Smith was transported to UC Davis Medical Center, where he remains under the care of burn specialists.
Family Describes Long Recovery Ahead
Smith’s family says the young manager now faces a difficult road to recovery filled with surgeries, pain management and rehabilitation.
Despite the physical and emotional trauma, his mother says he has maintained a remarkably positive attitude.
“My son has an amazing spirit and in the midst of all of this has been positive and trying to make us feel better,” Amber Smith said.
She described her son as a hardworking young man who is engaged and focused on building a future for himself.
“It was just so random of a thing, he’s a really good kid and it’s not just because he’s my son, he’s just a really good kid and has a good positive spirit about him.”
Family members say the attack has left them searching for answers while focusing on helping Smith heal.
Emotional Impact of the Attack
The injuries have not only affected Smith physically but emotionally as well. Amber Smith shared one particularly heartbreaking moment that occurred after the attack.
“As his mother, it broke my heart when he looked at me and said, ‘Why would he do this to me?’” she wrote.
The family says they remain focused on supporting Smith through recovery while helping him avoid financial stress during his lengthy medical treatment.
To assist with expenses, loved ones have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical and recovery costs.

Additional Surgeries Planned
Doctors have indicated that Smith’s treatment is far from over.
According to his family, the 20-year-old is expected to undergo additional surgeries next week, including a skin graft procedure designed to help repair some of the severe burn damage.
Burn recovery can often require months of treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up procedures, particularly when third-degree burns affect highly visible and sensitive areas of the body.
Community members have reportedly rallied around the family, offering financial assistance and messages of support.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Following the incident, authorities said Bluett was initially reported missing.
Investigators later located him and took him into custody. Police confirmed he was booked into the Sutter County Jail and is facing a charge of battery causing serious bodily injury.
The criminal case remains ongoing as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.
