Miami-Dade County, Florida — A Florida school bus driver has been arrested after authorities say she failed to inspect her bus at the end of a route, leaving a sleeping 6-year-old student behind before he was later found wandering alone in a neighborhood.
The incident has raised concerns about student transportation safety and the procedures required to ensure children are accounted for after school bus routes are completed.
Child Falls Asleep During Ride to School
According to a Miami-Dade arrest report, 62-year-old Patricia Barberena picked up the young boy and was transporting him to school when he reportedly fell asleep during the ride.
Authorities said the child did not get off the bus at his designated stop because he remained asleep.
Investigators allege Barberena believed she had completed her route and drove the school bus away without realizing the child was still onboard.
According to the report, she then drove the bus to her residence, parked it in a swale and went inside her home.
Boy Found Walking Alone Near Driver’s Home
Authorities said the child remained alone on the parked bus for approximately 15 minutes.
After waking up, the 6-year-old reportedly exited the vehicle by himself and began walking along Southwest 298th Terrace near Southwest 157th Avenue.
The situation could have become far more dangerous had a concerned passerby not noticed the child walking alone.
According to investigators, the individual contacted the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, leading authorities to intervene and ensure the boy’s safety. The child was eventually reunited with responsible adults, and no physical injuries were reported.
School Alerts Driver After Student Fails to Arrive
The incident was reportedly discovered when the boy’s school noticed he had never arrived for class. School officials later contacted Barberena to ask about the missing student.
According to the arrest report, the driver then went outside to search for the child after learning he was not at school. Investigators subsequently launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Driver Allegedly Admitted Bus Was Never Checked
During a formal interview with authorities, Barberena allegedly admitted that she did not inspect the bus after completing her route.

Police say she failed to conduct the required check to determine whether any children remained onboard.
According to the arrest report:
“The defendant knowingly and willfully failed to provide her children with the care, supervision and services necessary to maintain the child’s physical and mental health that a prudent person would consider essential for the wellbeing of a child.”
Authorities concluded that the failure to inspect the vehicle placed the child at risk and led to criminal charges.
Arrest Made as Case Moves Forward
Barberena was arrested Tuesday and charged with child neglect with no great bodily harm. Court records show she was booked into jail before being released after posting a $2,500 bond.
She has since submitted a written plea of not guilty to the charge. The driver is scheduled to appear in court again on July 31 as the case proceeds through the legal system.
The incident serves as a reminder of the critical responsibility school transportation workers have in ensuring every child safely reaches their destination and is accounted for at the end of each route.
