Memphis, Tennessee — A Tennessee mother is being praised for her quick thinking and compassion after rescuing a barefoot toddler who was found wandering alone in the middle of a busy intersection before ultimately helping reunite the child with her family.
The emotional rescue has since captured widespread attention online, with many calling the woman a hero. However, she says her actions were simply an example of a community coming together to protect a child in need.
Toddler Found Wandering in Busy Intersection
The incident unfolded Monday morning as Jabril Walls was driving through Memphis after dropping her own children off at school.
While heading to her grandmother’s house, Walls spotted a young girl standing alone in the middle of a four-way intersection.
Realizing the child was in immediate danger, she quickly stopped her vehicle and blocked traffic to prevent passing cars from reaching the toddler. The little girl, later identified as being 3 years old, was barefoot and alone.
Walls recalled the emotional moment she approached the frightened child.
“I opened my car door, and I put my arms out and she ran to me, saying she wants mommy and daddy,” Walls told Fox 13.
Search for the Child’s Family Begins
After getting the toddler to safety, Walls spent much of the morning trying to figure out where the child lived. The girl reportedly provided only vague clues about her home, making the search difficult.
Walls drove through nearby neighborhoods attempting to match the child’s description with local homes but was unable to locate her family.
Determined to keep the child safe, Walls eventually took her to a local fire station and contacted law enforcement for assistance. Throughout the experience, Walls documented parts of their journey together in videos that would later spread across social media.
One video showed the toddler curled up in Walls’ lap inside a vehicle, hugging her while waiting for help.
Child Reunited With Parents
After hours of searching and coordination with authorities, the little girl was safely reunited with her parents later that same day. The reunion brought relief to everyone involved and marked the end of what could have become a far more tragic situation.
Walls later reflected on how fortunate the child was that someone noticed her before she was harmed.
“I just thank God that I was able to be there at that time because not only predators, but it could’ve easily been a car, a dog, or anything. I’m just glad I was able to make the baby feel safe,” she told the outlet.
Rescuer Defends Child’s Parents
As videos of the rescue went viral online, some social media users criticized the toddler’s parents and questioned how the child ended up alone.
Walls, however, pushed back against those comments and urged people to show compassion rather than judgment.
“It takes a village. So I also extended my love to their baby and was able to be her guide. Because it takes a village,” Walls said.
She also emphasized that parenting can be challenging and that families often need support from others around them.
“You never know what a parent is going through, what they need. But I always know that kids need a village to raise a child. You can’t do it on your own. I can’t do it on my own. I have a village for my kids,” she added.

Heartwarming Friendship Continues
The story did not end with the reunion.
Just days later, Walls and the toddler spent time together again during a playdate, strengthening the bond they formed during the rescue.
The child’s family even jokingly referred to Walls as the girl’s unofficial godmother. The toddler’s mother later shared her appreciation publicly, writing:
“I love that my baby has another person that loves her just as much as myself.”
The touching story has become a powerful reminder of the impact a single act of kindness can have in protecting a child and bringing a community together.
