Boston, Massachusetts — Residents across Massachusetts and parts of the Northeast were startled Saturday afternoon when a powerful boom echoed across the region, rattling windows, shaking homes and alarming pets.
Scientists later confirmed the source was not an earthquake or explosion on the ground, but rather a meteor that exploded high above New England’s skies, releasing an enormous amount of energy as it broke apart.
Loud Boom Heard Across Multiple States
The event occurred at approximately 2:11 p.m. Eastern Time, with reports flooding in from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and other parts of the Northeast.
Residents described hearing a sudden, explosive sound that caused windows to shake and homes to vibrate.
Dozens of people contacted local media outlets after hearing the mysterious boom, with reports stretching from Boston to Ipswich, Massachusetts, and Johnston, Rhode Island.
At nearly the same time, witnesses across multiple states reported seeing a bright fireball streaking across the daytime sky.
NASA Estimates Explosion Equal to 300 Tons of TNT
Scientists quickly began analyzing the unusual event using eyewitness reports, satellite data and atmospheric observations.
According to NASA, the meteor fragmented while traveling through the atmosphere above Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
“The meteor appears to have fragmented at an altitude of 40 miles over northeast MA and southeast NH. The energy released at breakup is estimated to be equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT, which accounts for the loud noise,” NASA said in a statement.
Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also detected a signature consistent with a meteor at the same time residents reported hearing the boom.
Researchers believe the meteor entered Earth’s atmosphere over the South Shore region near Boston before breaking apart.
Why the Meteor Produced Such a Powerful Boom
Experts say meteors travel through Earth’s atmosphere at incredible speeds, often ranging between 25,000 and 160,000 miles per hour.
While most burn up harmlessly before reaching lower altitudes, larger objects can survive long enough to create intense shockwaves.
Astronomy educator Shauna Edson explained the science behind the sound.
“What you hear is the air compression of it moving really fast, creating those pressure waves, and occasionally sometimes you’re also hearing the stone itself break apart from the forces that it’s going through,” Edson told.
The resulting shockwaves travel through the atmosphere much like those produced by a supersonic aircraft, eventually reaching the ground as a sonic boom.
Meteorite Fell Into Cape Cod Bay
After analyzing the event, NASA determined that fragments of the meteor likely landed in Cape Cod Bay.
“This was a daytime bolide that produced a meteorite fall right in the middle of Cape Cod Bay,” NASA said.
The agency noted that the water at the impact site is approximately 34 meters deep.

NASA even used an unusual scientific nickname for the event.
“Fishy squisher.”
Experts say finding pieces of the meteorite will likely be difficult because most meteorites land in oceans due to Earth’s surface being predominantly covered by water.
Scientists Say Every Meteor Tells a Story
Although physical fragments may never be recovered, scientists can still learn a great deal from videos and eyewitness accounts.
“How bright it was, how fast it was moving, the angle it was coming from, and how long it stayed bright for, that gives us a lot of information,” Edson said.
She added that meteorites serve as valuable records of the solar system’s history.
“Meteors are the time capsules that carry information, so when we find pieces of them, each one is a treasure trove of information about the solar system,” she said.
The rare daytime meteor event has captivated both scientists and residents, offering a dramatic reminder of the powerful objects that occasionally pass through Earth’s atmosphere.
