Marion County, Ohio — A college community is mourning the loss of a promising young student-athlete after a tragic three-vehicle crash claimed the life of 19-year-old Eva Jae Moran, a freshman pole vaulter at the University of Toledo.
The devastating accident occurred on May 29 and has left family members, teammates and university officials remembering a young woman whose energy and positivity touched everyone around her.
Freshman Athlete Remembered for Her Positive Spirit
Moran was a member of the University of Toledo women’s track and field team and was pursuing a degree in health sciences.
University leaders described her as an exceptional student-athlete whose character extended far beyond athletic competition.
“The University of Toledo community is heartbroken by the loss of Eva Moran. Eva was an outstanding student-athlete whose determination, character and positive spirit made an impact on everyone who had the opportunity to know her,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom Moreland said in a statement.
Moreland also expressed condolences to Moran’s loved ones.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Eva’s parents, Alena and Derrek, and her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton and Kya. We ask that everyone keep Eva’s family and those closest to her in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”
The loss has deeply affected both the university community and those who knew Moran personally.
Coach Reflects on Athlete’s Impact
Moran’s coaches also shared emotional tributes following news of her death.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Andrea Grove-McDonough remembered the freshman athlete as someone who immediately made a difference within the program.
“Eva was a remarkable young woman whose energy, determination and kindness made an immediate impact on our program.”
She added:
“Eva approached every practice, every competition and every challenge with a positive attitude and a genuine love for her teammates.”
Friends and teammates have echoed those sentiments, describing Moran as a hardworking competitor who consistently supported those around her.
Fatal Crash Occurred on Ohio Highway
According to reports, the collision happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. on State Route 309 in Marion County. Authorities said Moran was driving a 2012 Hyundai Elantra when the crash occurred.
The incident also involved a 2013 GMC Acadia driven by Nathaniel Blankenship, 19, and a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Dalila Zamudio, 23.
A preliminary investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol indicated that Moran’s vehicle struck the rear of Blankenship’s SUV while he was waiting to make a turn.
Investigators said her vehicle then crossed into the opposite lane, where it was struck by Zamudio’s Jeep.
The impact reportedly caused Moran to be ejected from her vehicle.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Emergency responders rushed Moran to Marion General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities reported that Blankenship suffered possible injuries and was treated at the scene, while Zamudio sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Officials have not released additional information regarding possible contributing factors as investigators continue reviewing evidence.
Community Honors Young Athlete’s Legacy
Before attending college, Moran graduated from River Valley High School in Caledonia, where she excelled in multiple sports, including basketball, cross country and track and field.
Those who knew her say she brought enthusiasm and determination to everything she did, both in athletics and academics. As tributes continue to pour in, many are remembering a young woman whose future appeared full of promise.
Moran is survived by her parents, Alena and Derrek, and her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton and Kya.
