Fort Lauderdale, Florida — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who fell into a river in Fort Lauderdale despite a desperate rescue attempt by a bystander who jumped into the water to save him.
The tragic incident occurred early Tuesday morning along the city’s popular Riverwalk area and ended with the victim’s death despite efforts by both a Good Samaritan and emergency responders.
Early Morning Emergency Sparks Rescue Attempt
According to authorities, emergency crews received a call at approximately 5:07 a.m. regarding a possible drowning near the 200 block of Southwest Second Avenue.
Before first responders arrived, a nearby witness took immediate action after spotting an older man stumble into the water.
The witness, who asked not to be identified, said he was sitting along the Riverwalk with his girlfriend when he suddenly saw the man fall into the river.
Without hesitation, he rushed into the water in an attempt to pull the victim to safety.
Good Samaritan Describes Dramatic Rescue Effort
The witness said he managed to reach the struggling man and briefly gained control of him.
“I went in myself, I grabbed him by his two hands,” the man said. “’Bro, what are you doing? You know you’re in the water, right?’”
For a short time, the rescuer believed he would be able to guide the victim back to safety.
However, the dangerous conditions quickly changed.
“That’s when I slipped in the water,” he said. “After that, I get all wet and after that he went under the water. I had him for a little second and then he pulled away from me and fell into the water and he never came back up.”
The witness said the moment unfolded rapidly, leaving little time to react once the victim disappeared beneath the surface.
First Responders Arrive at Scene
Emergency personnel rushed to the Riverwalk area after receiving reports of the incident. Rescue crews searched the water and worked to locate the missing man.
Despite their efforts, authorities later confirmed the victim did not survive. Officials have not yet publicly released the man’s identity pending notification of family members.
