Fairfield, California — What should have been a night of celebration for graduating students and their families turned into a scene of panic and tragedy after gunfire erupted outside a Northern California high school graduation ceremony, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
Authorities continue searching for the suspect as investigators work to determine what led to the deadly violence.
Shooting Breaks Out After Graduation Ceremony
The incident occurred Wednesday evening shortly after the graduation ceremony for Sem Yeto High School at Schafer Stadium on the Fairfield High School campus.
According to officials, the commencement ceremony had already concluded when the violence unfolded. Families, students and friends were reportedly gathering outside the venue to celebrate and take photographs when shots were fired.
Witnesses said the gunfire sent crowds running for safety as confusion spread throughout the area.
Officials Confirm Multiple Victims
Just after 8 p.m., Alma Hernandez announced on social media that three people had been shot and described the situation as an active shooter investigation.
Authorities later confirmed that one person died while three others suffered injuries during the incident.
Officials have not yet publicly released the identities of the victims or provided details regarding the severity of the injuries sustained by the survivors.
Law enforcement remained at the scene for hours as investigators secured evidence and searched for the person responsible.

Another attendee, a father whose daughter had attended to support a graduating friend, said he immediately began running after hearing gunshots.

Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea expressed sympathy for those affected by the incident.
“Kind of traumatized for everyone here who had to witness it. It’s outrageous,” Belyea said.
“It’s sad. Prayers for everyone affected by it. I’m so sorry you had to go through that.”
School District Responds
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed that law enforcement officers responded to the campus following reports of gunfire.
In a statement, district officials emphasized that the investigation remains active.
“Law enforcement is on campus, and as this is an active investigation we have no additional information to share at this time,” a district spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the individuals affected and as soon as we have more details we will share that with you.”
Video footage from a livestream reviewed by local media reportedly showed the graduation ceremony itself and did not appear to capture any gunfire during the event.

Later Wednesday evening, Hernandez stated on social media that an active shooting-related chase was underway in Fairfield, though authorities did not release additional details.
Police have not yet identified a suspect or announced any arrests.
