Atlanta, Georgia — A 17-year-old student is recovering after surviving a shocking shooting aboard an Atlanta metro train, with family members and supporters crediting a crossbody bag for preventing what could have been a fatal injury.
The teenager, identified as J’Von Easterling, was returning from a science and engineering program at the Georgia Institute of Technology when the violence unfolded on a MARTA train. Authorities and supporters have described the attack as a “random and senseless act” that left the promising student hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite suffering significant injuries, Easterling survived what could have been a far more tragic outcome.
Shooting Happened While Teen Was Riding MARTA Train
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on June 5 while Easterling was sitting inside a stationary MARTA train at the Midtown station.
A GoFundMe campaign launched to support the teen’s recovery stated that he was returning home after participating in an academic program focused on science and engineering.
Authorities say the suspect approached the area where Easterling was seated before opening fire.
The teenager was struck multiple times, suffering serious injuries to his leg and hand. However, supporters say a crossbody bag positioned across his chest prevented one bullet from causing potentially fatal injuries.
The unexpected barrier may have played a critical role in saving his life.
Multiple Surgeries Required After Attack
According to information shared through the fundraiser, Easterling sustained extensive injuries and has already undergone multiple surgeries on his leg.
Additional surgery on his hand is also expected as doctors continue treating the damage caused by the shooting.

School Praises Student’s Strength and Leadership
In a statement, KIPP Atlanta Schools described Easterling as an exceptional young man who represents the best of the school community.
The rising senior is a state champion in track and field and has also taken on leadership roles in student government.
“We are grateful J’Von Easterling is recovering following this tragic incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time,” KIPP Atlanta Schools said. “J’Von is an exceptional young man who represents the very best of KIPP Atlanta Schools.”
The statement highlighted the impact Easterling has had on fellow students and the broader school community.
Federal Charges Filed Against Suspect
Federal prosecutors announced charges against Anthony Gresham, 42, of Lithia Springs, in connection with the shooting.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, Gresham faces charges including committing an act of violence with intent to cause serious bodily injury on a mass transportation system, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Investigators allege Gresham fired three shots toward Easterling before fleeing the scene.
Authorities later located and arrested him in Douglas County two days after the incident.
Prosecutors also noted that Gresham has previous convictions that include armed robbery, aggravated assault, theft, robbery by force, and drug-related offenses. Because of his criminal history, authorities say he was prohibited from possessing firearms.
He is expected to appear in federal court at a later date.
Renewed Concerns About Safety on Public Transit
The shooting has renewed concerns about passenger safety on Atlanta’s transit system.
The incident occurred just weeks after another deadly crime aboard a MARTA train, when a woman was fatally stabbed while traveling through the city.
