Pensacola, Florida — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Pensacola after two young sisters who disappeared from their home while their father was preparing dinner were later found unresponsive in a neighboring swimming pool, according to local authorities.
The girls, ages 5 and 8, were reported missing Monday evening after their father realized they were no longer inside the home. Police say the father had been caring for the children and preparing dinner when the incident occurred.
According to investigators, the father initially searched the house and surrounding area before contacting authorities for help. Officers responded to the 500 block of Gerhardt Drive shortly after 6:30 p.m. and immediately launched a search of the neighborhood.
Search Ends With Devastating Discovery
As officers searched nearby properties, one officer spotted the two sisters in a swimming pool located at a neighboring residence approximately 40 minutes after the search began.
Authorities said one child was found at the bottom of the deep end of the pool while the other was floating in the water.
In a desperate effort to save them, an officer reportedly climbed over a fence, entered the pool, and pulled both girls from the water. Emergency responders quickly began CPR and continued life-saving measures at the scene.
The sisters were then transported to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Investigators Believe Children Entered Secured Pool Area
As detectives worked to determine what happened, they discovered that the neighboring property was protected by a perimeter fence and that the swimming pool itself was enclosed by a second security fence.
Officials stated that both barriers appeared to be secure and locked when examined.
Investigators currently believe the older sister may have climbed over one of the fences before opening a gate for her younger sibling. Authorities noted that family members had previously seen the 8-year-old climb onto structures in her own backyard and described her as athletic and adventurous.
However, police emphasized that the investigation remains active and that some aspects of their working theory are still based on preliminary evidence.
What Authorities Think Happened in the Water
According to investigators, the children may have entered the pool through the shallow end before moving toward deeper water.

Officials believe one of the sisters may have encountered trouble as the pool floor quickly sloped downward. Detectives suspect the other child may have attempted a rescue, though authorities acknowledge that the exact sequence of events remains unknown.
Police estimate the girls could have been in the water for as long as 55 minutes before they were discovered.
Parents Not Believed to Be Negligent
Authorities said there is currently no indication that either parent acted negligently.
Investigators reported that the father was actively preparing dinner at the time, with food and place settings already arranged as he got ready to serve the family meal.
Police also noted that while the neighboring family was known to the girls’ family, the children did not regularly visit the property.
Mayor Shares Message of Condolence
Following the tragedy, Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves offered condolences to the grieving family and praised the first responders who rushed to the scene.
“Our hearts are completely broken over the devastating tragedy in Pensacola today involving the loss of two precious children.”
The mayor also thanked law enforcement officers, firefighters, and medical personnel for their efforts under extremely difficult circumstances and urged the community to keep the family in their thoughts.
As investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, the tragic loss of the two young sisters has left the Pensacola community mourning and searching for answers.
