ST. CHARLES PARISH, LA — A reckless driving investigation took a bizarre and wild turn when a suspect was attacked by an alligator after jumping into a swamp to evade law enforcement.
The Louisiana State Police confirmed that 40-year-old Victor M. Rivas was apprehended using drone technology, but not before a local alligator intercepted his second escape attempt.
The Reckless Chase Along Interstate 10
The chain of events began on June 7, 2026, when troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B received urgent reports of a Toyota Supra driving erratically on Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Boulevard in Jefferson Parish.
Before authorities could intervene, the sports car struck a concrete barrier, causing a severe tire blowout. Despite the heavy damage, Rivas allegedly kept driving, eventually transitioning onto Interstate 310 south in St. Charles Parish, where troopers successfully initiated a traffic stop.
From a Traffic Stop to a Swamp Jump
As troopers interviewed Rivas, they immediately noticed clear signs of physical impairment. However, before a standard DWI investigation could be completed, the situation escalated:
- The First Leap: Rivas abruptly fled on foot, sprinting to the edge of the elevated portion of Interstate 310 and leaping directly into the vast swamp below.
- The Track Down: Troopers, alongside deputies from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, launched a localized manhunt. Rivas was eventually spotted attempting to walk along U.S. Highway 61.
- The Gator Encounter: As law enforcement closed in, Rivas bolted back into the thick swamp waters. It was during this second attempt that he encountered an alligator, which attacked him and inflicted wounds to both of his arms.
Remarkably, despite suffering injuries to both arms, Rivas continued to push through the marsh until police deployed drone technology to pinpoint his exact location and arrest him.
Hospitalized and Charged
Rivas was transported by emergency medical services to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening alligator bite wounds. Officials noted in a subsequent news release that the alligator involved in the encounter was not harmed.

Jail records confirm that Rivas has been officially discharged from the hospital and booked on a litany of charges, including:
- Operating a vehicle while impaired (DWI)
- Resisting an officer
- Hit-and-run
- Careless operation of a motor vehicle
“Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences,” the Louisiana State Police stated in a press release, emphasizing the unexpected dangers of trying to outrun the law in bayou territory. “Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver.”
With drone technology becoming a standard asset for local police, do you think it is fundamentally changing how effectively search-and-rescue and suspect apprehensions are handled in dangerous terrain?
