Hunt County, Texas — A Texas man is facing serious animal cruelty charges after authorities rescued seven dogs allegedly living in dangerous and neglectful conditions that officials say threatened their survival.
The case stems from an investigation launched after a concerned citizen reported possible animal abuse, prompting a response from the SPCA of Texas and the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigation Began After Citizen Complaint
According to officials, the investigation took place on May 17 after authorities received information regarding animals possibly being neglected on a property in Hunt County.
During the operation, investigators discovered several dogs allegedly living in extremely poor conditions.
Authorities later identified the suspect as Jake Stephen Davis, who was arrested on May 27 and charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals — torture, according to the SPCA of Texas.
Officials said Davis was booked into the Hunt County Jail following his arrest.
Seven Dogs Found in Disturbing Conditions
Investigators reported finding six dogs confined inside pens with no access to food and only small amounts of contaminated rainwater.
According to the SPCA, a seventh dog was located nearby tethered to a small wooden dog house and also had access only to contaminated water.
Officials immediately became concerned about the animals’ welfare after observing their condition.
The SPCA provided emergency water to all seven dogs and conducted initial medical assessments at the scene. Authorities stated the animals appeared to be suffering from severe neglect and required urgent intervention.
Dogs Seized Due to Critical Health Concerns
According to officials, the dogs were determined to be in critical condition, leading investigators to remove them from the property.
The SPCA said the animals were seized because authorities feared they might not survive without immediate medical attention.

Following the rescue, the dogs were transported to an SPCA facility where veterinary teams began treatment and evaluation.
Officials have not released specific details regarding the medical conditions of each dog but emphasized that the animals required extensive care.
SPCA Teams Focused on Recovery
The SPCA of Texas said both medical and behavioral specialists are now working to help the rescued dogs recover from their ordeal.
“Our medical team continues to carefully assess each dog’s condition and provide the highest standard of care possible,” said Courtney Burns, unit chief investigator at the SPCA of Texas Animal Cruelty Investigations.
Burns also highlighted the emotional recovery process many neglected animals face after rescue.
“At the same time, our behavior team is patiently helping these dogs build trust through gentle socialization and compassion.”
Animal welfare experts say neglected dogs often require weeks or months of rehabilitation before they can fully recover physically and emotionally.
Suspect Held on $150,000 Bond
Authorities confirmed Davis remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail.
According to officials, his bond has been set at $150,000 while the case proceeds through the legal system. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced whether additional charges could be filed.
