Chicago, Illinois — A Chicago family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a 17-year-old honor roll student who was shot and killed while walking to school Tuesday morning in what authorities describe as a targeted attack involving multiple victims.
The teenager, identified as Pedro Ramirez, was known as a straight-A student, athlete and respected leader among his classmates at Tilden High School.
Teen Shot While Heading to School
According to authorities, Ramirez was walking to a bus stop in the Back of the Yards neighborhood at approximately 7:40 a.m. on May 26 when gunfire suddenly erupted.
Police say an unknown suspect exited a dark-colored SUV and began firing multiple shots, striking Ramirez and two additional victims nearby.
The teenager suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The shocking violence unfolded during the busy morning hours as students and residents were beginning their day.
Family Devastated by Sudden Loss
Ramirez’s loved ones described the loss as unimaginable and life-changing.
“Our lives changed completely, and this is like a dream,” Ramirez’s mother, Eloisa Garcia, told ABC 7.
Family members said Pedro was simply trying to get to school when the shooting happened.
“It’s too much violence in a streets, in the morning. He was just going to school. That’s all he was doing,” family member Asucena Velasquez said in Spanish.
The emotional statements reflected the grief and disbelief now overwhelming the family after losing a teenager they described as hardworking and full of promise.
Teen Remembered as Student Leader and Athlete
Friends and classmates remembered Ramirez as a dedicated student with a bright future ahead of him.
The 17-year-old attended Tilden High School near Canaryville, where he excelled academically and athletically.
He served as captain of the school soccer team and also played volleyball while maintaining straight-A grades.
His best friend, Mario Rosales, shared heartbreaking memories of conversations they had before the tragedy.
“He always said, ‘I will never miss school unless I’m very sick, or unless I’m dying,'” Rosales told ABC 7. “He actually died, so it really hurts my heart about those words that he said now.”
The statement deeply resonated with many people online as classmates and community members mourned the sudden loss.
Two Other Victims Critically Injured
Police confirmed that two additional victims were injured during the shooting.
Authorities said a 61-year-old man was shot in the back, while a 55-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the arm as they sat inside a nearby vehicle.
Both victims were transported to Stroger Hospital and were listed in critical condition.
Investigators later confirmed that a person of interest had been taken into custody, though officials have not publicly released information regarding a possible motive.
Community Mourning Teen’s Death
A GoFundMe page established to support funeral expenses described Ramirez as someone who left a powerful impact on those around him.
The fundraiser stated that the teenager had his “whole life ahead of him” and described him as “so young, so cheerful, so helpful.”
“His family is going through an incredibly difficult time. No mother should have to endure such pain,” the page stated.
It also remembered him fondly by saying:
“Pedrito was a kind young man, loved by many, and always willing to lend a hand. He was one of those people who truly leave a lasting impression.”
The investigation remains ongoing as Chicago police continue searching for answers in the deadly shooting.
