Junction City, Kansas — A massive community search for a missing 4-year-old boy with autism ended in heartbreak after the child was found dead one day after disappearing, according to authorities.
The young boy, identified as Axel, was reported missing on June 5, prompting an extensive search effort involving law enforcement officers, emergency responders and volunteers from across the community.
Large Search Effort Launched After Child Disappeared
According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, authorities immediately began searching after receiving reports that Axel had gone missing.
Officials said the search continued throughout the evening and into the following day as teams worked tirelessly to locate the child.
“An extensive search operation was immediately initiated and involved numerous law enforcement agencies, first responders and community volunteers. Search efforts continued throughout the evening and into the following day,” authorities said.
The sheriff’s office initially reported that Axel had disappeared from the 1900 block of Swenson Road. Local reports indicated the 4-year-old was nonverbal, weighed approximately 54 pounds, and stood about 4 feet tall.
Child Found the Following Day
Authorities confirmed that Axel was located during the early afternoon hours on the day after he disappeared. Emergency responders transported him to Stormont Vail Health in Junction City, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials have not publicly disclosed the circumstances surrounding his death.
“The Geary County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time,” the agency said.
Investigators also thanked the many individuals who participated in the search effort.
“The overwhelming support demonstration throughout this incident reflects the strength, compassion and unity of our community,” authorities added.
The investigation remains active as officials continue gathering information.
Father Remembers Son as His “Best Friend”
Following the devastating news, Axel’s father, Togan Loneys, shared an emotional message on social media remembering his son.
“The search was called off due to us finding him deceased. This is the absolute hardest time of our lives right now,” he wrote.
The grieving father spoke about the painful reality of life without his son.
“I [will] never get to hold my best friend, talk to him, play with him or share my birthday treats with him.”
Loneys described Axel as a child whose happiness touched everyone around him.

“Everyone who knew Axel knew he was the most upbeat, happy, excited kid ever. He lit up every room he came into and was loved by so many,” he continued.
He ended the tribute with a heartbreaking message:
“Mom and Dad are gona [sic] miss you so much buddy, I can’t even explain the feelings you left behind.”
Mother Shares Emotional Tribute
Axel’s mother, Cheyenne Koppa, also posted a message thanking the community for its support during the search.
“As many know, Axel has joined his family up in heaven. Despite having the biggest search party & wonderful community, I didn’t get to hold my baby boy again,” she wrote.
She also expressed gratitude to those who participated in the effort to find her son.
“But I’m grateful to know he was loved by many. Thank you for all the kind words & wonderful people helping out, but please give us time to grieve,” Koppa added.
Community Mourning Tragic Loss
The loss of Axel has deeply affected the Junction City community, where residents came together in large numbers to assist with the search.
As authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, loved ones are left remembering a child described as joyful, energetic and deeply loved.
The case remains under investigation, and officials have not released additional details at this time.
