Henry County, Ohio — A devastating crash in Ohio has left a family and community grieving after two young brothers were killed when a pickup truck driven by a teenager allegedly failed to stop at an intersection and slammed into the SUV carrying them.
The tragic collision claimed the lives of Gus Niese, 9, and Archer Niese, 10, two brothers remembered by loved ones as kind-hearted children who made everyone feel welcome.
Crash Occurred at Rural Intersection
According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened on May 30 at the intersection of County Road 18 and County Road Y.
Investigators said a 17-year-old truck driver was traveling on County Road 18 when he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck an SUV driven by 38-year-old Tyler Niese.
The impact caused catastrophic injuries to the young passengers riding inside the SUV. Authorities said 9-year-old Gus Niese was pronounced dead at the scene.
His older brother, 10-year-old Archer Niese, was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Community Mourns Loss of Two Brothers
Family members later identified the boys on social media, and news of their deaths quickly spread throughout the community. The Leipsic Local School District, where both boys attended school, released an emotional statement mourning the loss.
“Our hearts are broken by the loss of these two amazing, young boys,” district officials said.
School leaders also reflected on the impact the brothers had on classmates and those around them.
“Gus and Archer will always be remembered by the way they made others feel included. This is a legacy we can all learn from. We don’t know what others are going through; but we certainly can treat them with kindness.”

The boys’ father, Tyler Niese, serves as a corrections officer, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Following the crash, law enforcement agencies and community members rallied around the grieving family.
“There are no words that can ease such profound grief, but we want the Niese family to know they are not alone,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The Sheriff’s Office family stands beside them and will continue to support them in the days, weeks, and months ahead.”

A GoFundMe campaign established following the crash has raised more than $127,000, highlighting the widespread impact the tragedy has had on people both locally and beyond. The fundraiser was created by Whitney Niese, who identified herself as the boys’ aunt.
“We deeply appreciate everyone who has reached out, donated, prayed, or offered support in any way,” she wrote.
“Thank you for your kindness and compassion during this heartbreaking time.”
Investigation Remains Active
Authorities said Tyler Niese was transported to Defiance Regional Medical Center for treatment following the collision.
The teenage truck driver reportedly suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Investigators continue working to determine all the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
