Parkland, Washington — A Washington community is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old teenager who was allegedly robbed and shot to death while walking his girlfriend home, with loved ones saying his final actions were focused on protecting her.
Authorities have now arrested two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of Braylon Daniel Diaz, whose death has left family members and friends searching for answers.
Teen Allegedly Targeted While Walking Girlfriend Home
According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, Braylon was walking his girlfriend home in Parkland, Washington, on the night of May 24 when the encounter turned deadly.
Investigators say someone inside a vehicle called out to Braylon and asked him to approach. Police allege that once he got near the vehicle, the suspects robbed him of his jewelry before shooting him and fleeing the scene.
Authorities said the suspects left the teenager critically wounded before escaping. The incident sparked a homicide investigation that quickly drew attention across the region.
Girlfriend Says Teen Protected Her Until the End
Braylon’s girlfriend, Katelyn Zuniga, described the teen as someone who constantly looked out for those around him. Speaking to a local news outlet, she reflected on his final moments.
“He protected me his last few seconds. He was always a protector. He always cared about me. He would always take care of everyone around him.”
Her emotional comments have resonated throughout the community as friends and loved ones remember Braylon’s character and dedication to those he loved.
Family members echoed the same sentiment.
Family Remembers Teen as a Protector
Braylon’s stepmother, Chelsea Diaz, said she believes the teenager approached the vehicle because he was concerned about his girlfriend’s safety.
“He would never confront anybody. The only reason he would walk close to that car would be to protect his girlfriend.”
Loved ones have since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and continue raising awareness about the case. The fundraiser also encourages anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist investigators.

Two Suspects Arrested in Investigation
Authorities announced the arrests of a 26-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man in connection with the homicide.
Because formal charges have not yet been filed, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office has not publicly released their identities. Investigators said the female suspect was arrested by the Tulalip Police Department at a Walmart store.
According to police, she was reportedly traveling with the male suspect at the time of the shooting. The male suspect was later arrested by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office on unrelated felony warrants.
Both suspects are currently being held at the Pierce County Jail.
Investigation Continues as More Persons of Interest Emerge
Authorities say the case remains active and ongoing. Investigators reportedly located a red sedan believed to be connected to the shooting on May 27, providing additional evidence in the case.
However, officials have indicated that the investigation is far from over. Deputy Carly Cappetto said authorities believe there may be additional persons of interest connected to Braylon’s death.
Detectives continue reviewing evidence and following leads as they work to determine exactly what happened during the fatal encounter.
As loved ones mourn the loss of a teenager they describe as kind, caring and protective, they continue calling for justice and accountability.
