Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — Millions of Americans across the Plains are being urged to stay weather-aware as a powerful storm system threatens to bring damaging hail, destructive wind gusts and isolated tornadoes through the weekend.
Forecasters say the severe weather threat will expand significantly over the coming days, impacting a large swath of the central United States from Texas to Montana.
Severe Storms Shift Into the Plains
After severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds and hail across parts of the Northwest earlier in the week, the focus is now shifting eastward into the Plains.
Meteorologists expect the greatest threat on Friday evening and overnight to stretch from eastern New Mexico and southeastern Colorado into western Texas, western Oklahoma and southwestern Kansas.
The strongest storms are expected to generate large hail and damaging wind gusts, creating hazardous conditions for motorists, residents and outdoor activities.
While tornado potential remains relatively limited, severe thunderstorms could still cause significant property damage in affected communities.
Saturday Brings Expanding Severe Weather Risk
The threat area is expected to grow considerably on Saturday.
Forecasters say severe weather zones may stretch nearly 1,300 miles, extending from the Big Bend region of Texas northward through the Plains and into portions of the Dakotas and central Montana.
A particularly active corridor is expected across parts of:
- Nebraska
- South Dakota
- Northeastern Wyoming
- Southeastern Montana
These areas could experience some of the most intense storms of the weekend.
Hail and Powerful Winds Remain Primary Threats
Weather experts continue to emphasize that large hail and damaging straight-line winds are the biggest concerns.
Some storms may be capable of producing hail large enough to damage vehicles, roofs and crops, while strong wind gusts could bring down trees and power lines.
Forecasters also warn that a handful of the strongest thunderstorms may become capable of producing brief tornadoes on Saturday, particularly in localized areas where atmospheric conditions become more favorable.
Although tornado risk is lower than the hail and wind threat, residents are being encouraged to monitor forecasts closely.
Severe Weather Continues Into Sunday
The active weather pattern is expected to continue into Sunday across portions of the northern Plains.
Meteorologists say thunderstorms could develop from central Montana into north-central Nebraska during the afternoon and evening hours.
These storms may produce:
- Large hail
- Heavy downpours
- Localized damaging wind gusts
Repeated rounds of thunderstorms could also increase the risk of isolated flooding in some communities.

Flash Flood Concerns Growing Near Gulf Coast
While severe thunderstorms remain the primary concern across the Plains, weather officials are also monitoring the risk of heavy rainfall closer to the Gulf Coast.
Some storms in the region could briefly become severe, but forecasters say the greater threat involves heavy rain and localized flash flooding.
A particularly wet corridor may develop from southeastern Nebraska to northern Arkansas between Sunday night and Monday, where repeated rainfall could lead to water-covered roads and localized flooding issues.
Rainfall Could Benefit Drought-Stricken Areas
Despite the severe weather risks, the incoming moisture may provide important relief for drought-affected regions across parts of the High Plains and northern Rockies.
Some higher elevations in Montana and Alberta could even see snowfall this weekend.
The added precipitation is expected to temporarily reduce wildfire danger in several areas that have experienced unusually dry conditions since winter.
