The Fleming Island High School band ended their season on a high note by winning first place at the state championship! Their dedication, hard work, and passion for performing all came together in an unforgettable moment for the team.
For percussionist Ella, the victory was a proud and slightly surprising moment. “I’m incredibly proud and happy for everyone,” she said, reflecting on the competition. Given how strong the other bands were, the win felt like a huge accomplishment. The band’s progress throughout the season was remarkable. They practiced three to four times a week, steadily improving from scores in the 80s to an impressive 90 by the end of the season. The percussion section was a standout, earning a whopping 94.5. Ella admitted to being nervous but said it wasn’t as intense as when she was a freshman. “I felt confident we were going to win,” she said. With marching season behind them, Ella and her teammates are already looking ahead to their winter band season.
For Janya, a member of the color guard, the final performance was especially emotional. “We practiced for two and a half hours and stayed really locked in,” she explained. When the performance ended, there wasn’t a dry eye in the group—everyone was overwhelmed with pride. Despite her excitement, Janya joked about being distracted before their performance “I was really excited but really had to use the bathroom,” she laughed. Once on the field, though, she felt calm and focused. The color guard delivered a stellar routine, earning an 88.5 and winning Best Guard during prelims. “It was a close call, but we pulled through,” Janya said, proud of how the team came together for the final show.
The Fleming Island High School band’s journey to first place at states was filled with hard work, determination, and teamwork.
