From the beginning of October to the end of November, the Interact Club of Fleming Island High School will be partnering with the Fleming Island Rotary Club to hold a shoe drive. Not only does the Interact club teach leadership and teamwork to its members, but it also focuses on one of its main sayings and goals, which is to have “Service Above Self.” With the Interact club having well over 120 members and being one of the more well-known clubs around this school, one might think that it would be easy to collect tons of shoes. Still now, more than ever, they need donations, and they need them fast, by the end of November. Read the rest of this article to learn more about this shoe drive and how you can help.
What the Purpose for this Shoe Drive is:
This shoe drive has two purposes. It’s first purpose is to help raise money for the Interact club to put towards the schoolwide events that they host, such as the Talent Show and Mr. FIHS. They also help to maintain the Butterfly Garden, which is located in front of the Media Center. The Interact club not only helps out its community, but it also allows for students to engage in volunteer events and form new connections with others. It’s second purpose is to support the following charities: V for Victory and Purple Pinkies for Polio.
- V for Victory is a non-profit organization that nurtures its relationships with local businesses to help out the families of individuals fighting cancer. They do this by providing them with resources and services that they may need to help make their lives a bit easier.
- Purple Pinkies for Polio is a charity that is raising money towards eradicating polio in children. All around the world, Rotary and Interact clubs are raising and spreading awareness in regards to polio and their campaign to end it. Polio is a virus that can be transmitted through contaminated water and food or by having contact with an infected person. Once a person is infected, parts of their body can become paralyzed. Its symptoms range from mild flu-like symptoms to life-threatening paralysis in the body. Polio mainly affects children under the age of five.
Who can donate?
The good news is, anyone can! They are accepting shoe donations from both the students and staff. However, if you or anyone you know outside of school has a bunch of old shoes to donate, then you can also help out by passing them off to a student that you know that attends Fleming Island High or by dropping them off yourself at the front office. It requires no cost; all you have to do is bring in any old or used shoes and drop them off in the collection boxes located around Fleming Island High.
Where to drop off donations:
The shoe donation boxes will be located at the following places: the Hall of Champions, the Library, and the Front Office.
Final Statement:
Finally, the Interact club is hoping to raise over $1,000 through this shoe drive. Please help them out by spreading the word or even going as far as to donate some of your own old or used pairs of shoes. By donating your shoes, not only are you helping to support a good cause, but you are also helping to keep shoes out of landfills and giving them to those that truly need them instead.
